I have found that the best way is to create a subdomain and install a fresh copy of WordPress. This will of course include a new database. Then you can either clone the whole site or perhaps just install some plugins to test and get used to before they are implemented on your live website.

I will set up a subdomain on my server and install a new version of WordPress. I will then clone/copy your website or add the plugins to the new site. I will also create a daily backup if required – stored for 10 days.
The charge for this service is £7 per website per month including backups. There is no minimum contract and the new website will usually be set up in one or two days.
